Revision Activity:

Directions: You will work with a partner to complete the following document (twice).  1st Review – Writer (W) & Partner (P) to analyze article 1.  2nd Review – switch roles to analyze article 2.

Begin: W. reads aloud article.  P. writes down 1st impressions and shares with W.  W. shares her thoughts on strengths & weaknesses of article.

Next: Look at article together.  Go through each question.  Discuss questions/ answers and take notes.


  1. What is the purpose of the article?
  2. Who is the audience?
  3. Is there an attention-grabbing opening paragraph?  (List suggestions on how to make it more powerful)
  4. Is the essay unified? Does it waver from its focus? If so, where?
  5. Are research examples included?
  6. Are quotes from interviews included?
  7. Are the ideas fully developed? (List any that need more work)


  1. Are the paragraphs ordered in a logical sequence?
  2. Should paragraphs be rearranged?
  3. Does the article have an identifiable introduction, body, and conclusion?


  1. Have you used a style that grabs the reader’s attention?
  2. Have you included logical, smooth transitions between paragraphs and ideas?
  3. Are the voice and tone of your article appropriate to the audience you wish to reach?
  4. Are you using language in a way that is familiar and acceptable to your audience?
  5. Does it sound like there is a real person (you) writing?
  6. Do you have an interesting, creative title for the article?


  1. Do you vary your word choice and sentence length?
  2. Is the vocabulary clear, appropriate, and effective?
  3. Are there any awkward passages that need to be reworded?
  4. Have you run spell check?
  5. Is there any punctuation or grammar that needs to be checked?
